Shopper Finds Ferret in Bridgeland Street

Ferret found in Bridgeland Street 14th January 1972

Housewife finds ferret 14 Jan 1972

Mrs A Whapham picked up a friendly ferret while shopping in Bideford.

"It had beautiful fur and was in fine condition and quite tame" so Mrs Whapham borrowed a box from a shopkeeper and took it home, while the police located the owner. Mrs Whapham said that her two sons, Paul (3) and Mark (8) would have loved to have kept the ferret, but the family already had a cat and a dog.  The ferret's owner reported that the ferret, who was used to children despite being a working animal, had nibbled its way out of a sack to freedom while on the back of a lorry in the centre of town.

Angry Mums Bar Cars from School Playground 9 June 1972

Mums Bar Cars from School Playground at Pynes Infants and Westcroft Junior in Coronation Road 9th June 1972

About 30 to 40 placard-carrying mums bar the entrance to the children's school playground to stop other parents, in about 60 cars each morning, turning around their cars there and putting children in danger as they walk to school.

Mrs P Fishleigh said that when a five year old child was hit by a car a couple of weeks ago, it had 'really set the cat among the pigeons' so the parents were taking action in the mornings and afternoons.  Their petition to the council bears over 500 signatures and they have the support of the heads of both schools, Mr Molesorth and Miss Durant.  Later, the blockade was extended to cover the lunchtime period during which time cars were also using the full children's playground to reverse.
