Bideford Licenses.

Four referred for compensation

9.3.1918 Bideford licences

At Bideford Borough adjourned Brewster Sessions yesterday, the renewal of the nine licenses, notices of objection to which n the ground of redundancy had been served by the police at the instance of the Licensing Justices, came on for consideration. The magistrates in attendance were the Mayor, Mr A R Adams, in the chair, and Messrs J Cock, J Heywood, A G Duncan, J M Metherll, S R Chope, W T Goaman and G Boyle. Solicitors present representing owners and licensees were Messrs W B Seldon and H R Bazeley (Bideford) and Thomas and McGahey (Exeter). At the outset Mr Seldon suggested that a conference of the Magistrates and Solicitors would probably save time, and this course was adopted. Subsequently five of the cases were gone into publicly. PS Doidge stated that the population of the borough at the 1911 census was 9,078 and there were 35 licensed houses, giving one house to 259 people.
