Westward Ho! Centenary Year

On the occasion of the Westward Ho! Centenary, we are pleased to announce the plans for the construction of 60 luxury bungalows on a select site near the beach.

14.6.1963 WHo bungalows

The site on which the new luxury bungalows are to be built is in a sheltered position, away from the main road, but only a few minutes’ walk from miles of golden sands, safe bathing, the Royal North Devon Golf Club, shopping centre and bus terminus.

Other recreations within a short distance include riding, sailing, fishing, cricket, bowls, hunting and tennis.

Development Company: Swanswood Properties Ltd Architects: Messrs Oliver & Dyer Full Gazette article dated 14 June 1963

Big Bull Hill Scheme Accepted In Principle

Bull Hill should be pedestrianised and the access from New Road improved, the architects employed to make a feasibility study as to whether it would become a general improvement area have reported to Bideford Town Council.

6.4.1973 Bull Hill Bideford

In what they said was a preliminary report, they have also recommended that the existing dwellings in Bull Hill, Wellbrook Terrace, Kingsley Terrace, the undeveloped land to the north and two dilapidated cottages should be a general improvement area.
They advised rebuilding on these sites and also the replacement of Nos 25 and 27, Bull Hill. The two cottages – Nos 4 and 5 New Road – they said, were beyond rehabilitation and it was recommended that garages be provided on their site and on the vacant land. Councillor Michael Goss said he liked what was suggested but was there any object in getting the architects to go into details unless the council agreed with the broad principles?
They had started with Bull Hill, but now found Wellbrook and Kingsley Terraces included, said Councillor Pat Hughes.
The plan would make some people more secure, pointed out the Mayor, Councillor James Needs.
Councillor Frank Colwill contended that if they were going to look at the Terraces solely as residential areas, they should possibly look at the compulsory purchase of ‘eyesore buildings’ in the locality.
