Farmer's Funeral

Farmed Edistone Farm at Hartland

The funeral of Mr Augustus Thomas Walter, a well-known Hartland farmer who died at the North Devon Infirmary, Barnstaple, following a long illness, took place at Hartland Methodist Church. Cremation followed at the North Devon Crematorium.

Mr Walter, who farmed at Edistone Farm, Hartland, as did his father before him, was 70. He served in the Army in the First World War. The Walter family tradition with Edistone Farm, continued now in another generation, extends well over 100 years. 

The Rev N R Neil officiated at the service and Mr W Heard at the organ accompanied the hymns. Immediate mourners attending were: the widow, Vera and Bill Dudley, and Jean, Edna and Ian, Bryan and Diana, Frank; Mr and Mrs W Scoynes, Miss D Oke, Mr and Mrs G Poole, Mr and Mrs W Scoynes jnr., Mr J Lee, Mr and Mrs A Timms, Mr and Mrs W Timms, Mr and Mrs S Oke, Mrs R Moore, Mrs J Prouse, Mr and Mrs A Bragg, Mrs A Oke, Mr and Mrs Raymont, Mr and Mrs J Bragg, Mr W R Heard; Mr and Mrs A Newton, Mr and Mrs J Walter, Mr T Walter, Mr W Walter, Mesdames M Newton, H Kinsman, S Walter, F Short, M Jeffery, M Taylor, Miss E Walter. Bearers were nephews Messrs George and Walter Timms, Maurice, Jeffery, Walter Scoynes, Jim Prouse and Alan Oke.

Mr G Smith was MC, refreshments were served by Mesdames O Harris and R Bailey, and prizes were presented by Mrs W Slee.
Winners were: Mesdames W Prance, J Cottle, G Shackson, R Short, C Powell and C Littlejohns, Messrs W Prance, Keats, G Smith, R Stoneman and Rev R O H Eppingstone.

A double wedding took place at St Nectan's Church, Hartland.
The two brides, Miss Nancy Beer, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs A L Beer of 1 Natcott Lane, Hartland and Miss Heather Dayman, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Dayman of 98 West Street, Hartland, are cousins. The Vicar of Hartland, Rev. F H Lockyear, officiated. The organist was Lorraine White.
Miss Dayman married Mr Barry Lyndon Davies, youngest son of Mr and Mrs O L Davies of Barry, South Wales. He is a playing member of Bideford Rugby Club and his bride a member of the Hartland Drama Group, and one of the Les Girls of Hartland's concert party. There were five bridesmaids - Misses Linda Downie, Christine Prouse, Melanie Beer, Debbie Bateson and Judy Fanson.
Miss Beer was the bride of Mr Roy Richard Stowell, youngest son of of Mrs K E L Stowell and the late Mr J Stowell of 120 North Street, Hartland. The bridegroom is a member of Hartland Football Club and the bride, like her cousin, is a member of Les Girls. The five bridesmaids were Betty Stowell, Claire Stowell, Nicola Jeffery, Lindsay and Kerry Higgins. The bridegroom's brother Terry was best man.
Following a reception in the Church Hall, both couples left for touring holidays.
