Rowing triumphs at Bideford

‘Fours’ and ‘eights National Championships

Bideford Amateur Club’s senior fours crew won the senior coxed four championship and with it The ‘Daily Herald’ cup,  and the West of England crew of eight held off the challenge of the North London holders to win the senior eights championship.

By pony and trap to market

Last link with old days at Bideford 

Perhaps Bideford’s last link with the days when ponies and traps parked outside the Pannier Market far outnumbered motor-cars is provided by Miss Maud Jeffery of Lower Netherdowns, Weare Giffard.

8 July 1955 Safe door weighing two tons

She has been driving her pony and trap into town every week for the past forty years and used to trade outside the market and along Grenville Street.

There is a stable adjoining her cottage occupied by her 10 year old pony Billy.

America’s tribute to ‘J.H’

‘One of golf’s immortals’

A big surprise came to Mr J.H. Taylor, former Open golf champion on five occasions, when a special envoy arrived to present to him an illuminated scroll bearing the signatures of some 150 of America’s ‘senior’ golf professionals as a tribute to ‘one of golf’s immortals.’
