Instow local art show was ‘tremendous success’

Over 100 pictures from all ages

Over a hundred pictures, all the work of artists living in Instow and the immediate neighbourhood of Westleigh and Yelland, most of whom had not exhibited before, were on view at the Rifle Hall, Instow on Saturday.

The idea of the exhibition, organised by Mrs Katharine Tottenham, was to show the unknown talent among the residents of the local community. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr Ronald Duncan, poet, writer and farmer of Welcombe.

25 October 1957 Instow local art show was tremendous success

In the picture, Mr Ronald Duncan congratulates 11 year old Terry Curtis on his work. From left to right: Mrs K. Tottenham, Mrs J. Louden (assistant organiser), Terry Curtis, Mr R. Duncan, Mr Henry Williamson, Mrs Duncan.

Torridge ‘graveyard’ of wooden hulks

Old ships left to rot

These once proud wooden vessels, stripped of masts and superstructure, are left to rot and decay in what was once their home water. The presence of these hulks up and down the Torridge has given rise to concern for the danger they may cause, as they break up, to other craft using the river.

18 October 1957 Torridge graveyard of wooden hulks

Seen in the picture are (from left to right) the ketch ‘Maude’, the schooner ‘Margaret Hobley’, the bow of the ketch ‘H.F. Bolt’, the ketch ‘Ketch’ and in the background the schooner ‘Welcome’.

Yeo Vale road ruin provides a mystery

Ruins on Bideford-Bradworthy road

Peeping from the edge of a wood on rising land above the Bideford-Bradworthy road opposite Yeo Vale are these picturesque ivy-clad ruins.

6 September 1957 Yeo Vale Road ruin

The chapel used to stand on the lawn at the left-hand side of the path leading up to Yeo Vale House but remains of the building were removed to their present side by Mrs Morrison, widow of the Rev. Hooper Morrison in about 1820, perhaps to provide a landscape feature to be viewed from the house. In the east wall and seen on the right of our picture is the tombstone of William Gifford, Justice of the King’s Bench, who died on December 12th, 1400.
