An interesting letter has just been received by Mrs Packer, of Broadclyst, from her husband, Corpl Packer of A Company, 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment, who is serving with the Expeditionary Force in Northern France. River scenes that enchant the visitors

All eyes on the Torridge river

Mr G.H. Jolliffe has given us permission to reproduce one of his pictures which shows a typical Bideford quayside departure of the Bristol Queen. The beauty of the Quay-side promenade with its shopping frontage flanked by the line of shipping and avenues of trees has been much commented upon by visitors and residents alike.

Spray dodging – the new pastime

Stormy seas at Westward Ho!

High tides whipped by gale-force winds provided visitors and residents alike with a new source of entertainment during the early days of this week.

30 August 1957 Spray dodging the new pastime

Spray was being flung high inshore over the roofs of Springfield Terrace and Westbourne Terrace. The tips of the spray waves reached 15 feet above the roofs of the houses before they broke.

Puzzle corner at Bideford

Whose right of way?

The four way road junction at the east end of Bideford Bridge poses a puzzle in arriving at a system of satisfactory control. One of the problems is that of crossing the heavy stream of traffic coming round the Barnstaple Street corner onto the bridge. Bideford Town Council recently decided to ask Devon County Council to consider providing traffic lights or a roundabout or a traffic controller there.
