    An interesting letter has just been received by Mrs Packer, of Broadclyst, from her husband, Corpl Packer of A Company, 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment, who is serving with the Expeditionary Force in Northern France. Lundy Memorial to John Pennington Harman V.C.

Friends gather at his favourite boyhood spot

On the fifth anniversary of the publication of the citation announcing the V.C. in the London Gazette a large party of personal friends of Mr Martin Coles Harman, owner of Lundy, assembled in the ‘ V.C. Quarry’ named by Mr Harman as the spot which his son made his playground.

Lance-Corporal Harman was 29 when he lost his life in action in some of the bitterest fighting of the Burma Campaign in 1944.

Community centre opened at Westward Ho!

‘Realisation of hopes and dreams’

The opening ceremony of the new community centre was carried out by Mr Hadyn Wood, the distinguished violinist and composer who resided in the district for some years.

10 June 1949 Community centre opened at Westward Ho

The centre, formerly known as the Kingsley Gym and originally built as part of the old Roman Catholic College at Clevelands Terrace, is believed to be the first of its kind in North Devon. Now to be known as Kingsley Hall, the centre was purchased by the local Community Association by means of gifts and loans and with the aid of a grant from the Ministry of Education.

Floral dancing at Appledore

Headed by May Queen

Headed by the May Queen, 13 year old Eunice Simms with her four attendants – Wendy Simms, Frances Hailwood, Ann Harding and June Pinnick – a floral dance procession wended its way through the streets of Appledore on Saturday.

The event was in aid of the building fund of the Appledore Branch, British Legion, and was organised by the Branch Social Committee.
