Bideford’s first woman councillor

Town council election results

Bidefordians assembled outside the Town Hall late on Thursday to hear the declaration of the poll in the municipal elections gave a particularly warm welcome to Mrs E.M. Cox,the first woman to be elected a member of Bideford Town Council.

20 May 1949 Bidefords first woman councillor

Cllr. Cox received a great welcome from the crowd as she stepped to the microphone and promised to attend meetings regularly and give her full energy to doing the best she could for electors. She added: ‘I feel rather lonely so will you please, when you can, send along another woman. In the meantime don’t be afraid, I will keep my end up with the boys.’

Thriving ‘Orphan of the storm’

Lucky puppy

This is the story and photograph of Tessa a Schipperke (Dutch barge dog) puppy belonging to Mr and Mrs T.G. Kelland of Summerhill, Littleham, who has been successfully nursed from a pathetic new-born puppy weighing 4 ounces to a thriving bundle of energy and fluff weighing one and a quarter pounds after 25 days.

22 February 1949 Thriving Orphan of the storm

Tessa’s mother died when having puppies and this was the only one saved from the litter.

In that first anxious fortnight Mr and Mrs Kelland had to feed the puppy every two hours day and night which continued for 11 days. Very appropriately Tessa has been registered as ‘Orphan of the Storm.’

Children’s model of Torrington

Illustrating local architecture

Fourth year pupils of Torrington Secondary Modern School have constructed in cardboard and wood a composite group of models based on a representation of Torrington Market Square to illustrate local architectural features of 1851.

15 December 1950 Childrens model of Torrington

It has all been made at school and represents a good deal of application and education which the pupils have entered into with zest. The models include the Town Hall, ‘The Black Horse’, the Old Coffee Tavern (now Tickle’s garage), the Bell Inn (Green Lantern Café), Blatchfords etc.
