Gift plaque on Clovelly council houses

Local scene depicted

Over the centre of a block of four traditional style houses erected by Bideford Rural District Council at Winsworthy, Clovelly, has been placed the plaque illustrated above.

17 February 1950 Gift plaque on Clovelly council houses

A very promising artist Mr Walter Crang, executed the carving – the scene depicts Gallantry Bower, Clovelly, with Lundy beyond, the scene being visible from the upstairs windows of the houses.

A sense of humour in advertising

New film at the Strand

A bedstead slung between two trees and a notice saying ‘You can’t sleep here,’ catches the eye outside the Strand Cinema, Bideford.

10 February 1950 A sense of humour in advertising

It is an enterprisingly-humorous pointer to the film of that title being shown today and tomorrow at the cinema.

An early ‘special’ to Bideford

Early railway days

The fact that Bideford is on the railway has received a certain amount of publicity recently.

In last Sunday’s Observer Paul Jennings wrote of the air of far-away places at Waterloo Station suggesting that ‘we are doing something much more wonderful than just going to Bideford, splendid though this is.’ Later he remarks on the ‘lines stretching out to Bideford and Europe.’

Mr Jennings visited Bideford as a member of the Oriana Madrigal Society when they gave a recital at Bideford Parish Church on November 19.

27 January 1950 An early special to Bideford

It seems appropriate to publish this reproduction of an old print of early days of the railway alongside the Torridge.
