Getting up steam for tomorrow

 Fire Service gala at Bideford

The first gala ever to be held by a Devon County Fire Service takes place at Bideford Sports Ground tomorrow.

3 August 1951 Getting up steam for tomorrow

Some of the equipment being shown will be over 200 years old. One fire engine being used will be a steam engine in perfect working order over 100 years old. The engine has been pumping water by the Kingsley Road, Bideford on several occasions during the past week.

Fishing off Greencliff, Abbotsham Mr William Copp of Strawberry Cottage, Meddon Street, Bideford and Mr W.R. Elliott of Hillbre, Old Barnstaple Road, Bideford, caught three tope measuring
between 4 feet and 4 feet 6 inches.

Bideford blacksmith wins English championship

Multiple medallist 

At the Royal Show at Cambridge last week, Mr H.J. Newberry of Old Town Smithy, Bideford, won the Show championship for the highest number of points for horse-shoeing over the three days of the competition.

13 July 1951 Bideford blacksmith wins English championship

Mr Newberry also won the cup for the best fitted shoes and one gold, two silver and one bronze medal, obtaining a first in hunter shoeing, third in carthorse shoeing and v.h.c. in horse-shoe making.

Mr Newberry, aged 31, came to Bideford from Reading in 1949.
